Terry Cairns
Southland, Southern Manager

"Southland born and raised where my family had a farm and transport business. I was educated at Drummond School, St Kevins College and Otago University. My life has been spent working with people and livestock, in farming, the transport industry, Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries, the Stock & Station industry and farming 1000 ewes for most of that time.

I was Invercargill Manager of the Southland Farmers Co-op when it was sold to Reid Farmers in 1997 and Ross McKerchar and I then decided to have a go on our own and formed South Stock Ltd. Ross and I ran South Stock Ltd happily and successfully for twenty years with wonderful staff and assistance from a great group of friends. Not a big business but one with a reputation for integrity and sound industry knowledge.

During that time I spent 10 years as Chairman of the NZSSA and had a considerable interaction with MPI, Dairy NZ, Federated Farmers and numerous other government agencies. The work revolved around animal welfare, disease control both endemic and exotic, industry standards and assisting with the formation of new legislation in various forms.

As with a lot of companies, succession was our next challange and though not imperative, was inevitable. The opportunity to join with Peter Walsh and his team was an option which appealed to us both as Peter operates with similar values, integrity, trust and attention to detail. Along with the rest of our team and our many wonderful, faithful clients who came with us we look forward to a continuation of the camaraderie, humour and enjoyable times we have had into the future.
